President Buhari had earlier suspended the chief justice Walter Onnoghen on the grounds that the Code of Conduct Tribunal directed him to do so, pending the conclusion of his trial.
The lawyers representing Onnoghen have stated that the Tribunal does not have the authority to try the CJN.

“We call on all well-meaning Nigerians to rise in defense of democracy and save our nation from this imminent slide into tyranny,” the PDP said in its statement.
