After lawmakers ousted Martin Vizcarra due to some allegations linked to corruption and poor management of the Coronavirus pandemic, several thousands of Peruvians had come out in their numbers on grounds that Vizcarra’s impeachment smelt like foul play.

Former Speaker of Congress, Manuel Merino, had stepped in Vizcarra’s shoes as interim President but abruptly announced his resignation after the demonstrations against him were violently responded to.

Twelve ministers also followed suit. The protests which started out as peaceful, took a dramatic turn on Saturday in Lima as protesters and police clashed in the evening and two students lost their lives.

Peru has been the worst-hit nation per capita by the pandemic and the economy has also suffered a 40% drop amidst the lockdown in April.
