Middlesbrough to release John Obi Mikel and Stewart Downing

Middlesbrough will release the duo of John Obi Mikel and Stewart Downing, following the expiration of their contracts.

Former English international, Stewart Downing, was a youth player at Boro, spending eight seasons with the club in the Premier League, re-joining the club in 2015.

At age 34, Stewart Downing has played over 400 matches for Middlesbrough, winning the League Cup with them in 2004 as well as the UEFA Cup final run in 2006.

Meanwhile, John Obi Mikel played only nine matches for Middlesbrough, having joined in January, on a short-term deal from Chinese club, Tianjin TEDA.

Goalkeepers, Konstantopoulos and Longergan have also been released from the Riverside club.
