Many are unaware of the HIV prevention drug – Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), which could prevent one from getting infected when exposed.

With over 1.9 million Nigerians living with HIV, one would have thought a lot of sensitization efforts would have been carried out to prevent the spread of the virus and imminent loss of lives.

HIV is one of the deadliest public health challenges, as the UNAIDS reports that about 36.9 million people are living with the virus as of 2017.

The rate of HIV transmission can be greatly reduced if many people are aware of the HIV prevention drug, PEP.

PEP is a short term HIV antiretroviral medicine which reduces one’s chance of becoming infected after a potentially high-risk situation such as unprotected sex with an anonymous partner or rape, bursting of condoms, and sharing of sharp objects to mention a few.

PEP was initially introduced to health workers who occasionally get exposed to HIV in their line of duty but is now being administered to other non-occupational exposures.
