Chinese experts denounce US for hiking tariffs

Chinese experts denounced the United States for hiking tariffs on goods imported from China and for violating international rules.

Niu Li, deputy director with the Department of Economic Forecasting of the State Information Center, said, by announcing a 25 percent tariff on 200 billion U.S. dollars worth of some 6,000 Chinese products, from textiles to electronics on May 10, U.S. President Donald Trump has violated the international trade rules.

“It is no longer a defender of rules but a saboteur instead, as the current multilateral framework system has met with grave challenges. The United States has blatantly trampled down upon rules of the international law. Its integrity has been called into question in the world,” said Niu.

Zhang Yansheng, member of the Academic Committee of the National Development and Reform Commission, said the United States is a typical bully.

“I think the United States is a typical bully. We should let people of our country and the rest of the world know about U.S. bullism in trade and reveal its true features,” said Zhang.

Niu said that “[The United States has quit] organizations like the United Nations (UN) Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, the UN Human Rights Council, Paris Agreement and Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The JCPOA is reached after years of efforts and bears legal effects of the international law after the voting of the UN.”

Chen Wenling, a chief economist of the China Center of International Economic Exchanges, said: “The United States has withdrawn from many binding international conventions. What authorities it has had? Its image has been subverted, becoming dim, without a luster, and its creditability has totally lost.”
