Moments ago, Ahmed Lawan emerged senate president of the 9th National Assembly, polling 79 votes, while his other contender, Ali Ndume, garnered 28 votes.

We now bring you seven facts you probably didn’t know about the new senate president, Ahmed Lawan.

  1. Ahmed Lawan is happily married with children

2. He was born in 1959 and obtained his O’Level in 1979. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Geography in 1984 from the University of Maiduguri. He had his Master’s degree in Remote Sensing from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and a Doctorate degree in Remote Sensing/GIS from Cranfield University, UK, in 1990 and 1996 respectively.

2. Between 1985 and 1986, he worked in the Yobe state civil service, as an Education Officer in the Ministry of Education.

3. Mr Lawan kick-started his lawmaking career at the House of Representatives in 1999 when he won election to epresent Bade/Jakusko Federal Constituency of Yobe State. The lawmaker was elected under the platform of All Progressives Congress (APP), a party he pioneered as Vice Chairman of Yobe State Chapter. He remained a member until his re-election in 2003.

4. Lawan is close to the family of President Muhammadu Buhari.

5. Lawan was first elected into the Senate in 2007 after his stint in the House of Representatives, and has won re-election three times since.

6. He was Senate Leader in the 8th Senate after his failed bid to become Senate President in 2015.

7. Lawan has bagged so many awards that include National Honours Award of the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON); and more.
