indian supreme court on citizenship amendment act

Consequent to the nationwide protests spearheaded by Kanhaiya Kumar on a recent Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the supreme court in New Delhi is set to hear a plead to examine the validity of the CAA act introduced by PM Modi.

The act which seeks to offer citizenship to nationals of other countries who have been marginalized in these other countries – Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, excluding Muslims caused a national uproar.

A batch of 143 petitions will be heard including some from the Indian Union of Muslim league and the leader of the Congress, Jairam Ramesh.

The argument from the Indian Union of Muslims borders on the fact that the CAA violates the fundamental Right to Equality and grants exclusion based on religion.
