The Nigerian Senate has ordered the arrest and prosecution of operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, involved in the recent killings of innocent Nigerians across the country.
This followed a motion by the Senator representing Lagos Central, Oluremi Tinubu, raising concerns on the allegations of gross misconduct by some SARS operatives.
There have been growing concerns on the unprofessional activities of some officers of the SARS and these concerns have yielded little or no result despite assurances from Police authorities.
Recently, the calls have become more intense with the hashtag #EndSARS campaign.
The lawmakers said this can no longer continue. They, therefore, ordered a thorough investigation into the alleged misconduct against some SARS officers.
The Senate, however, ruled out the option of scrapping SARS, pointing out that the baby cannot be thrown away with the bathwater.
They also want the establishment of a Special Bureau Unit by security agencies so as to monitor the conduct of its officers, arrest, and charge erring ones.
